Claude Cazals

Champagne Claude Cazals operates 9 hectares in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, in the villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus and Villeneuve. The vineyards are planted only in Chardonnay, a grape variety that gives to the cuvees finesse, aromatic power and the capacity of a long and rich maturation.

A portfolio of masterfully composed Blanc de Blancs contrasts the broad-shouldered stature of Oger with the vertical tension of Le Mesnil.

Cazals is a southern name from Herault, but the family has been in Champagne since Ernest Cazals, a cooper, came to deliver barrels in 1897 and decided to move to Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. His grandson Claude established the Maison and is credited for the invention of the ‘gyropalette’, a mechanical instrument used to speed up the remuage period. After his death in 1996, his daughter Delphine took over the family business, all within Grand Cru and Premier Cru areas.

Nowadays, we are happy and proud to share with you this sublime and exceptional landscape : The Cazals Clos. It covers 3.70 hectares, and its Grand Cru ranked vines give birth to rare, prestigious, fruity and smooth vintages with subtle and delicate flavors.

The Estate

Maison Claude Cazals is in the legendary Grand Cru town of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and is one of the very few estates in Champagne to have a ‘clos’ (or walled vineyard). It is very particular due to its exposure and geological makeup, and was enclosed by stone walls many years ago to create a kind of micro-climate. The Clos Cazals is the largest of the 21 clos in Champagne.

Claude’s father Olivier Cazals bought this property in the 1950s for his son. However, it was Delphine who noticed that this walled-in vineyard was consistently their best, obtaining a full degree higher than their other parcels; she petitioned the Comité to have this vineyard designated a clos and won the right for her 1995 vintage. One small upper part of the clos with a small chapel was planted in 1981, as ‘La Chapelle du Clos’.

This small family estate has the status of RM (Récoltant Manipulant) and produces around 5,500 cases per year. Elegant, balanced, dense, mineral-rich and ripe Champagnes are crafted.

Champagne making

The Côte des Blancs has a chalky soil, with slopes oriented to the east allowing westerly winds to sweep the vine. The vines are exploited and vinified in reasoned culture, with the greatest respect for nature. The domaine has High Environmental Value and Sustainable Viticulture Certifications in Champagne. Nowadays, their vine culture is integrated and environmental-friendly. To elaborate the cuvees, new oenological techniques are mixed with ancestral methods, like riddling. Thermo-regulated vats and oak barrels give our cuvees quality and balance.
